"Born and raised in Nebraska of Swedish heritage,
I worked as a painter and printmaker before beginning my sculpting career. Sculpting
began after moving to the Colorado mountains in 1975. My growing up years were spent
in the country and small towns as well as the city, resulting in exposure to cultural
diversity. Consequently, my interests and perspectives are diverse. Variety
of artistic subjects has led to doing works in series, lending context and
continuity. My inspiration is a source that while personal is also public, in that I
have my story and the viewers have theirs. The ones I am privileged to hear connect
with mine in poetic and poignant ways I never could have imagined. |

French Lessons, my most recent
series, was started in 1996 and continues to grow, holding my fascination, wondering
what's next. The "what's next" could as easily be a beautiful bird or
animal, a Zen landscape, or a figure. It is all, therefore, a never-ending
story." Darlis has won many
national awards, including a Gold Medal of Honor for French Lesson 4, and a
Bronze Medal for French Lesson 7.
